Scary Short Story Contest Winner ("Remember" and New Story Posted ("Spring Sacrifice") (11/1/18)

I am pleased to announce that the short story "Remember!" (which has appeared in Tales From Midhgardhur on Channillo and in Tales From Midhgardhur, Volume II) is one of the five winners of the 2018 Scary Short Story Contest from SIA (Support Indie Authors)! I am very proud of this particular story, which was actually written as an experimental challenge (it is a rare 2nd person perspective story!), and glad to be able to say that the Tales From Midhgardhur are not just award-winning fiction, but contest-winning as well! "We LOVED this piece and are very excited to feature it on our website," wrote Ann Livi Andrews for SIA.

In other news, yesterday on Halloween a new story was posted to the Channillo series Tales From Midhgardhur entitled "Spring Sacrifice" - another great spooky story!

Midhgardhur Books Now On Audible Audiobooks! (1/8/18)

I'm happy to announce that two of our books are now available as Audible audiobooks, with another one on the way! "The Tales of Halfdanur the Black" was made into a short audiobook (just over an hour long), available on Audible for $6.95 (or $4.86 for members), and the complete Tales from Midhgardhur, Volume I, is available for $19.95 (or $13.96 for members). These were narrated by Bridger Conklin, who really brings the stories to life with his talent and voice! Tales From Midhgardhur, Volume II is on the way, too, narrated by Gary Miller-Youst, who has an amazing baritone voice and really evokes the best from the stories (if you enjoyed the story "Remember!", imagine it being read in a baritone!). Please check these out!

I'm running a contest for a 3-month Bronze membership to Channillo.com, home of my award-winning Norse fantasy series "Tales from Midhgardhur" - How do you enter? Visit my AUTHOR BLOG and leave a comment between now and Sunday, June 4th, 2017. On Monday, June 5th, 2017, I shall announce the winner on that blog! All you need to do is leave a comment with a name or handle that I can use to identify the winner! The winner will be randomly selected with a roll of a polyhedral die (because you can't take the Gamer Geek out of the Fantasy Author, it seems!). So head over to my blog - you can follow it, if you do not already! - and leave a comment to enter the contest!

A Dispute with Sanctum Secorum and a Review from Bob Brinkman! (5/9/17)

For those of you who are not aware of this, Sanctum Secorum is a podcast reviewing Appendix N literature (the books that inspired the creation of D&D and thus RPGs in general) and the awesome Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. I am a huge fan. Recently they reviewed Poul Anderson's Three Hearts and Three Lions, and to my horror, none of the reviewers had enjoyed it! They said they were expecting hate mail. I wrote to say that I wouldn't stoop to writing hate mail, but I passionately disagreed with them about the book. Apparently, this got them (or at least Bob Brinkman) curious, and they checked out my work! Pretty cool to find people whom you admire reading your stuff!

They posted THIS in response (which was very cool of them, and I appreciate the good publicity - especially the idea that fellow gamers may hear of my work through this!), which sparked a cool dialogue about some of the specific points of disagreement (mostly what they see as borrowings from Tolkien, I am fairly certain are independent borrowings by Tolkien and Anderson from Old Norse and Old English myth).

Then I found that Bob Brinkman had posted a REVIEW of "The Tale of Halfdanur the Black" on Sanctum Secorum. I don't know if he realizes how awesome that was for me - I've been inspired by Appendix N all my life, or at least since about 1985, and now something I wrote was just reviewed on a website dedicated to Appendix N! That's one of the best compliments I could have received! Here is the text of his review:

Author Colin Brodd disagreed with our opinion on Three Hearts and Three Lions. We told our listeners to “punish him” by “buying his books – lots and lots of his books.” Now, we didn’t really think that he should be punished (or even scolded)… but we still think folks should check out his books. Of course, I put my money where our mouth is and bought the lot. I am not disappointed.

Having now read the short story, the Tale of Halfdanur the Black, I’ll go on record as saying that I personally enjoyed this a lot more than I did the book that inspired the discussion. First off, I’m a sucker for oral tradition-style storytelling and this tale certainly qualifies. The author’s tone (Colin…can I call you Colin?) reads in an almost… grandfatherly fashion. It reads like an old Norseman telling the tale, not as if telling a children’s story, but as if telling the story around a roaring fire. I’ve heard my share of stories around the fire, this one would fit right in. This style gives the tale an even more authentic flavor than Brodd’s usage of language (which is often saga-worthy spot on).

I think my only complaint is that I feel this story would benefit from being heard as opposed to read…and there is no audio available. There are readers who can be scared off by Norse spellings and pronunciations (to them I’d say – you are missing out), but even for those familiar, I think the style of the story is one best heard – although certainly enjoyable as read. This is a story to read aloud to someone, whether your children or your spouse, after you brush up on your pronunciations. Save it for a cold winter’s night.

The tale itself is imminently satisfying and often quotable. I’m not going to spoil it here. Instead, I urge you, shell out the $1 for the kindle version and introduce yourself to the literary works of a member of our community. You can find Colin on Google+, as well as in the DCCRPG community over there. So, support your local gamer. Especially one as vested in the materials as Colin Brodd. $6 gets you his works (set in Midhgardhur) for Kindle, $21 gets you both of his books in hard copy, and $1, a single dollar, gets you a taste via this short story for Kindle (which is also included in Tales From Midhgardhur, Volume I).

Seriously, spend the $1. It is a small price to pay to discover a new author and make your own decision. For less than the price of a cup of coffee you can be transported away to Noregur – the lands of the Northmenn. Me, I’m thinking that you’ll enjoy it and it might even give you some inspiration for the table.

New Amazon Review of Tales from Midhgardhur, Volume I from historical romance author Melanie Ann Thurlow! (3/1/17)

I was thrilled when Melanie Ann Thurlow, whose work I have been following for some time, said that she was going to read and review my collection of short stories. Here is the review she posted to Amazon:

"In this book you can expect to find dragons, sorcery, and so much more in worlds Brodd makes easy for the reader to imagine. Not only is the book written well, the stories—though short—are complex, and could easily be expanded to fill an entire novel each.

Each of the ten stories in this book stands on its own. So, if you haven’t read The Saga of Asa Oathkeeper by this author, you can still enjoy this book.

Whether it is Gylla coming back from the dead as the dark Valkyrie, Arngrimur fighting off undead beings with a sword that has a lust more intent on killing the living, or teleportation in the search for Ingjaldur’s crown, this collection of short stories will keep you entertained and mystified by the imagination of their creator.

Every story (within the story) is interesting and engaging. A few of the stories seemed to jump around a little, but overall it is a dark book that is a good, quick read."

"In Search of Romance" published in Tales from Midhgardhur on Channillo! (2/28/17)

The latest installment in the Channillo series Tales from Midhgardhur  has been published! "In Search of Romance" tells the story of a minor noble from South Gaunorria, a would-be troubadour, who brings his family to the Caliphate of Nonorra in search of the romances originating in that land that are revolutionizing the literature of his own homeland. His daughter has dreams of her own, and schemes that involve the the vikings who have come to the caliphate to trade . . . check it out!

Asa Ragnvaldardottir, a.k.a. Asa Oathkeeper, to appear on "The Protagonist Speaks" on March 10th, 2017! (1/24/17)

Great news! Assaph Mehr, the author of the excellent Roman-themed fantasy Murder in Absentia, publishes a blog called "The Protagonist Speaks." In "The Protagonist Speaks," the protagonists of novels are interviewed, rather than the authors! Asa Oathkeeper recently sat down for an interview, and it is scheduled to be published on March 10th, 2017. More details (like the link to the interview) will be posted here as they become available!

New Amazon Review of Tales From Midhgardhur, Volume I from David Roach, author of the excellent "Marauder"series! (1/17/17)

I love the "Marauder" series by David Roach. His Norse-inspired fantasies remind me of my own work, but of course his take on Norse fantasy is somewhat different from my own. It is really a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Norse fantasy (which probably includes anyone reading my website!). Anyway, here is his review of my collection of stories:

"5 STARS

Dark, Gritty, and Dazzling. A must read for all fans of Norse Myth.

Mr. Brodd will dazzle and ensnare you in his vivid and dark Norse tales. The cover of this book does not in any way do his collection of short stories justice. Mr. Brodd takes the world of Norse mythology and catapults you into the deepest and darkest realms of mystery. His depiction of Norse gods is second to none bringing every detail to such vivid life you forget where you are in the moment. I particularly enjoyed that he did not shy away from some of the grotesque and bloody truths of Norse myth that so may seem to wash over. His detailed knowledge of Norse mythology lends a great deal of credibility to his stories and Mr. Brodd adds his own artistic touches to bring you into his world. I am not normally a fan of short stories and I could easily see Mr. Brodd turning each of them into a full fledged book (which I hope he does); however I was captivated by each one and each story stirred my emotions in very different ways. I am looking forward to reading his next book."
